For 54 consecutive days I set aside time each day to sit at my desk and create a book. When I began this project, I was in a mind numbing artistic schlump, having been away from the studio at UICB for nearly 6 months due to the COVID19 shut down. I’d lost momentum in my daily artistic practice. I needed to refocus my energy back into books and bring some structure back into my artistic practice…and so, a-book-a-day project was born.

The most important part of this exercise was to create without a plan, to let go of what I thought I should be creating and just make something…anything! From this daily book making practice themes began to emerge, accordion structures and paper cutting began to evolve. As I worked under the limitations of time and material, I was given more freedom to push ideas of book form, structure and visual storytelling.

The books I created during this project were largely unplanned, I made no drawings or mock-ups, I simply began by choosing a paper and getting straight to it. Some days I spent 10 minutes on a book, others I spent 4 hours. I set no hard expectations which allowed me to experiment with different materials I had on hand and incorporate structures I was interested in. These books are very much experiments and works in progress.

The following images are a small sampling of some of the books created during this project.
